Marcel Desailly shares his Priceless football moments
Discover the retired French football star, World Cup champion, and two-time UEFA Champions League winner's most memorable moments of his successful career.
Marcel Desailly's 20-season football legacy is holding strong in France, Italy, England, Qatar, and beyond, as he enjoys his second decade in retirement. Born in Ghana and raised in France, the defensive midfielder and centre back known as "The Rock" was an integral part of France's victories in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000. He was also the first player to win the UEFA Champions League in back-to-back seasons with different clubs.
Desailly got his start in 1986 with FC Nantes, where he spent six seasons establishing himself as an organised, strong, and intelligent defensive leader who could quickly get a sense of the opposing team's tactics and put a stop to them. In 1992, he made the jump to Marseilles, where he got to play alongside his friend Didier Deschamps and help the club win the UEFA Champions League title in his only season there.
The following season, Desailly made another move, this time to Italy to join A.C. Milan. It was there where he won his second UEFA Champions League title in as many seasons and ultimately won two Serie A titles as well. Never wanting to stay in one place, Desailly had further stints playing in England for Chelsea FC, where he helped them win the FA Cup in 2000, and in Qatar for Al-Gharafa for one season (where they won the Qatar League title in 2005) before playing his final season for Qatar SC and retiring in 2006.
Now, Desailly is sharing his wisdom in a video interview where he'll discuss how football can be used in education, his most Priceless moment of scoring in the UEFA Champions League final against FC Barcelona in 1994, and what he believes it takes to be a great captain.
