Championship-winning players Justin Rose and Graeme McDowell joined the Mastercard Challenge, which pitted the two Mastercard Ambassadors against one another on the legendary course’s front nine holes.

This unique match-play event was designed to lift the spirits of fans while highlighting Mastercard’s support of the battle against COVID-19, which includes its partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other organizations.

“It’s out of our control what we’re experiencing, so make the most of your time at home,” said Rose. “My family and I are doing things together that we wouldn’t have had the time to do otherwise.”

“It’s a time to pause, look around, and realize the things that are important in life—our families and those close to us,” McDowell added. “Life doesn’t have to be lived on fast forward.”

The tournament held plenty of action, though, as both players applied their expertise at physical golf—and their familiarity with Pebble Beach—in the online world.

Both agreed that WGT by Topgolf was about as realistic as golf games get.

“It’s an addictive game, the graphics are phenomenal, and the green shapes are extremely realistic,” said McDowell.

The two bantered amiably as they played, answering fan questions and sharing birthday wishes and memories of past tournaments. In the end, McDowell came out on top, giving him victories in both the online and real-world versions of Pebble Beach.

And while the tournament is over, McDowell offered ten Mastercard cardholders the opportunity to receive a personalized video message on the topic of their choice. He’ll share an expert golf tip, congratulate a loved one on a milestone, or give some words of encouragement to the COVID-19 frontline responders they care about the most.
