People's

People’s occupies the garden level of a Greenwich Village townhouse that was once Edith Gregor Halpert’s Downtown Gallery, and it operates as an evening club and art salon where rotating exhibitions of emerging artists sit alongside a nocturnal program. Designed by Ryan Mahoney of Workstead for founders Emmet McDermott and Margot Hauer‑King, the venue unfolds through three distinct rooms: a low‑ceilinged parlour with an original fireplace, chocolate‑velvet banquettes and moiré‑print walls; a plum‑velvet middle salon under a softly gleaming bronze ceiling, fitted with a DJ booth for dancing; and an airy gallery crowned by a greenhouse skylight and a massive timber bar repurposed from an antique French bookshelf. The bar serves sharply chilled martinis and small plates such as tuna toasts and caviar, while a strict no‑photo policy and attentive service shape a discreet, social atmosphere.
