The Stonewall Inn

The Historic Stonewall Inn is located in the heart of the West village and is considered the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ rights movement. On June 28th, 1969 patrons of The Stonewall Inn fought back against what had become regular, tolerated city sanctioned harassment by the Police department. It was one of the first times a large group of LGBTQ people refused to accept the status quo of oppression and fought back. The Stonewall inn, and the uprising that happened there became the iconic flashpoint that sparked the long uphill battle for LGBTQ equality that is still being fought for to this day. The Stonewall Inn is a city and State Landmark and the surrounding area was designated the first ever LGBTQ National monument in 2016.
