If you want to experience the best of autumn in New England, head to Ipswich, Massachusetts, and stop in at Russell Orchards. Their farm store is in an eighteenth-century barn with an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, old-fashioned candy, and more. They even make their own fruit wines. But the most popular treats here are the cider doughnuts—people line up to watch them being made, and the aroma is irresistible! You can wander down a hill to see goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, miniature horses, and other farm animals, or take a hayride. This is a great place to take the family, especially on a crisp day, when there’s just enough of a chill in the air to enjoy sitting by the fire in the barn, drinking a cup of hot, fresh-pressed cider. We enjoy trips to Russell Orchards in the spring and summer, but in October, it’s just perfect. I wouldn’t buy my Halloween pumpkin anywhere else.
