I write books about road trips, but long before it was my job, I was searching out giants, teapots, art deco amusement parks, and stainless steel diners. Now, my family goes along for fun and research. On a recent 3-week trip, we drove Route 66 to the Pacific Ocean and the Lincoln Highway back east. Concrete tepees at Wigwam Village in Holbrook, Arizona, were the coolest motel rooms, and you can’t beat the souvenirs at Fort Cody Trading Post in North Platte, Nebraska. Once you drive with roadside oddities in mind, you’ll have nonstop fun too. Want to see cliff divers at a Mexican restaurant? Check out Casa Bonita in Denver. Long to eat ice cream inside a big shoe? Head for the Shoe House in Hallam, Pennsylvania. Dinosaurs battling Civil War soldiers your thing? Pay a visit to Dinosaur Kingdom in Natural Bridge, Virginia. The most priceless moment, for me, was visiting Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio, a tiny resort town stuck in the 1950s. Grab a stool and a root beer at Eddie’s Grill and you’ll know the meaning of “priceless” too.
