I became a zookeeper out of college and began working with elephants. As an elephant caretaker, I visited The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Never had I seen such a place for elephants. The landscape was endless rolling hills, trees, grass, ponds, mud, and lots of elephants. Generally, when someone sees an elephant, it is usually in a zoo or circus, and they are in awe of the animal’s sheer size and majestic beauty. Unfortunately for the elephants, the conditions in which they live are often less than ideal. Elephants are meant to live in large family groups, traveling many miles every day. It is very difficult to simulate that environment in captivity. The Elephant Sanctuary is one of very few places where elephants can live as they were truly meant to. While it isn’t open to the public, enthusiasts can watch the resident elephants on the “ele-cam” at The Elephant Sanctuary’s Web site. Knowing that these magnificent animals are wandering thousands of acres of natural habitat, socializing and playing, is priceless.
