Li-Lac Chocolates came across my mother’s radar for the first time in 1971, and she and my father have rarely missed an excuse to go back. Since 1923, the tiny chocolatier has rarely departed from the small-batch recipes of its original owner, George Demetrious, now passed down through three generations to its current owner, Martha Bond. In 2005, escalating rents pushed the store out of its original space on Christopher Street to its current, slightly more spacious corner on Jane Street; however, the friendly service, unpretentious confections, and—according to my mother, who is never wrong about these things—the best chocolate-covered marzipan there is remain unchanged. Don’t even think about walking out of the lavender-hued store without trying one of their flavored dark chocolate truffles, which my husband and I chose as our wedding favors just a few years ago.
